Personal Bio

Dr. Parker has been with the Alta Vista Animal Hospital family since 1987. He was the first specialist to join the practice and has seen it grow from 10 vets and staff to the 28 specialty, emergency and general practice vets and multiple staff that it has today. Despite the steady growth and expanded services he enjoys the fact that there is still a "family atmosphere" both for the animals and clients/staff alike. "It is great to part of a caring and dedicated team." He is married with four children and the proud owner of 2 cats - Ming and Sam. Outside of his commitments at work and with family he enjoys serving his community through his involvement in the local church and loves to escape to the great outdoors whenever he can-camping, canoeing and fishing.

Dr Parker graduated with his veterinary degree from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 1981. He immigrated to Canada and worked in small animal practice in Richmond Hill, Ontario for 2 years before returning to the University of Guelph to complete an internship in small animal medicine and surgery. From 1984-1987 he completed a residency and Master of Science degree in small animal surgery at the University of Minnesota, USA.

In summer 1987 he gave a series of lectures and clinical training at a referral center in Stromsholm, Sweden before taking a position at Alta Vista Animal Hospital. From 1987 to present he has been providing surgical referral services to Ottawa and surrounding area and has been involved in numerous clinical presentations to local veterinary meetings.

In 1991, he became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Also, in 1991, he established his own mobile surgical specialty service but returned full time to Alta Vista in 1993 as its first specialist partner. He was active in starting and establishing the 24 hour care and emergency services, an internship program and expanding the specialty services to include 2 more surgeons, internal medicine, ophthalmology, and dentistry. This culminated in his active involvement in the design and completion of the Referral Services side of the building where he works today. In 2005 he resigned as a partner and has returned to his first love which is small animal surgery.

Dr Parker loves all aspects of small animal surgery but has a special interest in orthopaedics including lameness diagnosis, TPLOs, Total Hip Replacements (BFX and CFX), arthroscopy, patellar stabilization, angular limb deformity correction and fracture repair. He is certified in PennHIP radiography.
