Personal Bio
Dr. Elder joined the Emergency and Critical Care Department of the Alta Vista Animal Hospital in 2006. Growing up on his family farm in rural Dundee, Quebec, surrounded by a wide variety of livestock and pets, allowed Dr. Elder to develop a great appreciation of the profound impact that animals can have on our lives.
"Knowing firsthand how much joy they can bring and the important position they hold in our families allows for a sincere understanding of the stress and concern one feels when they become ill".
This early experience led to the pursuit of undergraduate studies in Animal Biology, followed by Veterinary Medicine at the University of Guelph. Looking to further strengthen his educational foundation, he completed a Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship at the University of PEI. It was here that Dr. Elder's interest in emergency medicine developed.
"Emergency medicine is a very unique area of the veterinary field. It combines aspects of many different departments and every shift provides a new and exciting challenge!"
Becoming an associate at the Alta Vista Animal Hospital remains a career highlight for Dr. Elder.
"I feel very honoured to work in an environment filled with many caring and hard working individuals who share the same commitment to preserving the health and well-being of Ottawa's furry family members."
In his spare time, Dr. Elder enjoys visiting with friends and family, travelling, music, theatre and spending time with his dog, Jake, a terrier cross who holds the world record for the highest stationary jump!
