Personal Bio
Dr. Dumais has been with Alta Vista's dental practice since 2002. He also practices in clinics in Montreal and Quebec City. He has three times chaired the Credentials Committee of the American Veterinary Dental College, and is proud to have contributed to making the AVDC applicant evaluation process fair for applicants and the patients and the owners who want a highly competent, skilled dental specialist with good medical judgment.
"I love animals. I recognize how important they are in our life and how big a difference it makes when we are able to keep them healthy and happy as long as possible. My favourite part is to hear a pet owner telling me how much the quality of life of their pet was improved following the dental care I provided."
His most memorable story is of a dear old cat he treated. "One day I had a 21 year-old cat referred by an internist because he had stopped eating. The cat had been on IV fluid and support for 3 days, but had not resumed eating. Surprisingly, all his blood-work and tests were normal. The only thing we could see was that he had bad teeth. The owner, an elderly lady, told me that she expected her cat would be diagnosed with cancer or something terminal, and had considered euthanasia. Against the advice of all her relatives who thought it was crazy to spend the little money she had on dental treatment for a 21 year-old cat, she decided she would not abandon her old friend just because his teeth were bad. She had her cat treated and the following day he resumed eating as if there was no tomorrow.
3 months later, the owner said to me that even if her cat died the next day, she would still consider the dental treatment worth every penny. Her cat was acting10 years younger and that made her day - day after day."
Dr. Dumais has a cat and dog of his own. He recently lost two of his other dogs who were quite old. "We miss them a lot - the house feels empty. Every week, I travel between Quebec City, Montreal or Ottawa. My cat Lilly always comes with me. She just sleeps on my lap and enjoys the trip. With her, I am never alone. We've been through so many things, lived in so many places..."
